ShinBuddhistGold
       Meeting:  Nov 12, 2006

Hosted by David Fujikawa and Ted Akahori

       Book for discussion:
Shin Buddhism, Bits of Rubble Turn into Gold
          By Taitetsu Unno

It was noted that there was definite connection between 2 previous BC selections,
"Mosiaic Moon" and "Dharma Treasures" as reference was made to both in the book
       - as well as quotations included.  Jean brought a wonderful poem written by Rev. Dr. "Ty" - which she passed
around - and Lilly read out loud to the group.
It was nice to have Rev. Tada back from his travels to contribute to the discussion, as well as everyone else.

DharmaTreasures   Meeting  June 25, 2006
  Hosted by Jean Minami

   Book for discussion :
  Dharma Treasures

   by Hawaii's Shin Buddhist Pioneers
Members expressed that they really enjoyed this book for its real, simple, sincerely
written expressions of the impact of Jodo Shinshu , the nembutsu and shinjin on the
daily lives of these exceptional Jodo Shinshu followers.  On the suggestion of Rev Tada,
everyone took turns reading the poem, "Kono Mama" (As I Am) by Mrs. Chiyono Sasaki whose poem was read
by D.T. Suzuki, noted Zen scholar/author of the time, and declared the writing of a 'myokonin'.   Efforts had been
make to contact offsprings of these writers, but were not successful.  We are interested in knowing what kind of
life these persons lived, and how their children perceived them.
This was followed by members sharing writing they had done.  All were inspirational and evident that they were
truly written from their heart!  We asked if those members would mind if we collected their written expressions and
put together a small pamphlet or booklet of writngs of Book Club Members.  Please forward any contributions to
Terry Nakawatase.

Cover     Meeting of Mar 26, 2006
    Hosted by Ed Ito
   Book for discussion :

   The Year of Magical Thinking

       by Joan Didion

Just wanted to tell Ed and Anne Ito, "THANKS FOR A WONDERFUL DISCUSSION AND
THE DELICIOUS LUNCH!....of empanadas, chicken salad and cookies!!"  There was
a lot of stimulating discussion as we shared our feelings about Joan Didion's
book "A Year of Magical Thinking"...of how she did, or wasn't able to accept her
loved one's sudden passing - complicated by the life and death struggle of
her daughter at the same time.  The exchange compared Western and Eastern
interpretation and handling (emotionally and psychologically) of death - as well as
Christian  and Buddhist, and somewhat of difference of the "privileged,"
affluent class to the average person(s) way of relating to this major change in
life.
